Our Story

Founders: Kim & David Lance

Kim's love for gardening began in her childhood on the North Shore of Long Island, inspired by her mother's passion. In their suburban New York home, her parents practiced sustainable farming, growing vegetables from seedlings and planting bulbs each fall, which bloomed into vibrant tulips, crocus, and daffodils each spring.

Moving to Texas, Kim missed these familiar blooms but eagerly shared her gardening knowledge with her new community. Her passion flourished anew when she relocated to Wisconsin, embracing fall bulb planting and eagerly awaiting the emergence of tulips and daffodils each spring at Winter Willow Farm. Here, Kim blends her childhood memories with modern sustainable practices, cultivating wildflowers and native plants.

David Lance grew up in South Side Chicago, immersed in urban life. He dedicated 27 years to the military, moving 13 times globally but never to the Midwest, where he longed to raise his children. Serving initially in combat and conducting surveillance missions on the Iranian border and in Baghdad, David later became a medevac pilot, driven by a desire to make a positive impact.

After years apart, the stars brought David and Kim back together, and they married on December 1st, 2019, on the bank of Salado Creek, TX. Kim's hope for David to take a breath and retire, combined with David's love for the Midwest and his desire to learn bee farming, inspired them to settle in Wisconsin and establish
Winter Willow Farm.

David's mantra is, " be(e) kind, plant it and they will come," while Kim believes that a "garden is meant to be shared." These two philosophies guide their dedication to sustaining life and finding inspiration in nature. David cherishes his military service and the contributions he made to his country and continues his life of service as a volunteer firefighter. Kim upholds her passion for learning, as a professor in public relations and strategic communication, while nurturing their farm and family. But most importantly, today they both find peace living together on the farm, teaching their children (eight combined!) the values of nature, hard work, and love, and prioritizing soulful fulfillment over material wealth.

David and Kim are excited to share this life and beauty with the community.
